Legal or Illegal?

Although for centuries, Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes, however, the use of drug has been in banned in the 21st century. Cannabis is considered as a Class B drug and the possession of it veiled prison or unlimited fine or both. If anyone is found guilty of trading Cannabis, he can be sentenced to prison for more than 14 years along with the unlimited fine.

There are several reasons that prevail over the advantages of Cannabis, and make it illegal and controversial. The main reason is: it is perceived as addictive and gets one “high”. Other than this, Cannabis has historical linkage with narcotics. Today, Cannabis is banned in almost every country.

Medical Use of Cannabis

Since Cannabis is one of the oldest psychoactive plants known to humans, the medicinal use of the plant is also veiled in many ancient books. The therapeutic potential of hemp has been recognized since ancient times. Today, Cannabis is for many conditions, which include:

  • Nausea and Vomiting, Particularly when associated with Chemotherapy.
  • In cases of weight loss caused by HIV/AIDS, Cancer or Anorexia Nervosa (Cannabis is an appetite stimulant).
  • Pain relief for cancer and arthritis patients.
  • Neurological disorders.
  • Glaucoma
  • Epilepsy.
  • Asthma.

Cannabis is also used for substance addition and withdrawal as it has been proved effective in suppressing carvings and other withdrawal symptoms. Other than this, the patients of Schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder have also been treated with Cannabis, with no significant side-effects.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis is a popular drug that is obtained from Indian Hemp Plants like Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica. The common names given to the drug are grass, pot, hash, weed, mull, ganja, cones, smoke and hooch. The main active chemical present in Cannabis is HTC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), which is a mind-altering agent.

Cannabis is used mainly because it acts a depressant drug that slows down the activity of central nervous system and the messages which travel between brain and the body, thereby altering the feelings and moods of the individual. The large doses of Cannabis can result in Hallucinogenic effects.
